The Redentore is one of the Venetians' most treasured festivities, and is a tourist attraction thanks to the spectacular firework display in the evening. It falls on the third Sunday in July, when Holy Mass is held in the presence of the Patriarch, followed by a religious procession. But the special moment of the festivity takes place on Saturday night: with the unbeatable backdrop of Saint Mark's Basin, a play of lights and reflections produce a kaleidoscope of colors with the silhouetted spires, domes and bell towers of the city behind.
Flemings and the Dutchmen in Florence
Firenze -Through October 26, 2008
www.polomuseale.firenze.it
The Galleria Palatina in Palazzo Pitti hosts a great exhibition that shows the interconnection between the artistic impact and the business relationship between the Netherlands and the Italian regions in the XV century. The exhibition details the changes in painting brought about by the introduction of oil - as the binding element in colors – in the Nordic countries and the way in which this new approach was quickly embraced by Italian artisans’ workshops. The works on display were commissioned or purchased in Florence between 1430 and 1530 and underline the importance of the work and creativity of Flemish artist Jan Van Heyck and his school: they certainly moved and attracted the interest of well-to-do Florentines, which translated in an innovative push felt and adopted by Italian artists.
